City enforcement agencies arrest nearly 400 suspects

On Sunday, 8 September 2023 just after 12:00, Metro Police officers were on crime prevention patrols at Garda Place, Hanover Park when they received information about a firearm that was thrown onto a premises by gangsters. Officers attended to the scene and recovered a black Norinco 9mm pistol loaded with six  9mm live rounds of ammunition and the serial number intact. The firearm was removed and booked in at Philippi South African Police Service(SAPS).

On Saturday, 7 October 2023 Metro Police officers arrested a suspect for possession of drugs in Joe Slovo, Milnerton. Just after 11:00, officers saw a suspect matching the description of a drug dealer in the area. When the suspect saw the officers, he ran into a nearby property, but was apprehended and found in possession of 113 Heroine units and 30 packets of Dagga. The 28-year-old suspect was arrested for the possession of drugs and detained at Milnerton SAPS.

On the same day, officers participated in a SAPS Anti-Gang Unit patrol in Heideveld and Hanover Park due to ongoing gang violence and drug activities in these areas.  Metro Police officers arrested two suspects - one for  possession of drugs and one for illegal possession of ammunition and with added charges of possession of a dangerous weapon. Both suspects were detained at their respective police stations. Officers confiscated nine mandrax tablets, nine half mandrax tablets and 15  live rounds of ammunition, which were booked in at SAPS.

Officers arrested 77 suspects and issued 3 332 fines during weekly enforcement patrols.

TRAFFIC SERVICE

Traffic officers issued 62 879 fines of which 36 858 were for speeding offences and 25 929 for various other traffic offences. Officers also executed 1 597 warrants of arrest.

A total of 35 arrests were made of which 26 were for driving under the influence of alcohol, four for reckless and negligent driving and five for other transgressions, which included a stolen vehicle, false documentation and assault of an officer, among other things.

LAW ENFORCEMENT

During the past week, the City's Law Enforcement officers conducted 552  enforcement operations, where officers arrested 284 suspects and issued 2 841 fines. Officers attached to the Law Enforcement Advancement Plan accounted for 278 of the arrests, of which 181 were for the illegal possession of drugs.

PECC

Of the 1 672 calls recorded during the past weekend, 58 were physical assault cases, of which 11 were gunshot related. Call agents also dealt with 23 domestic violence cases.

The emergency centre also recorded 53 motor vehicle and 17 pedestrian vehicle accidents.

'The City's enforcement agencies week-on-week arrests and confiscation of illegal drugs and fire arms show that our integrated approach in crime prevention and the use of technology such as CCTV, drones, dash and body cams is effective in creating a safer environment. We work closely with other enforcement agencies, the South African Police Service, private security companies and Neighbourhood Watches to ensure successful arrests and removing drugs and illegal firearms off the street. We will increase our efforts as we move towards a busy summer season with increased traffic flow on our roads,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
